We are looking forward to regularly receiving good news stories about Person County organizations, businesses and the best of Person! It does not matter if the discussion is about schools, small or large businesses, retail, agriculture, office, manufacturing, professional, or nonprofit, we hope you will send us good news information that informs our residents and highlights to the world what we already know, EVERYTHING is Better in PERSON!

Here is an example of a good news story that helps our businesses to grow:

With the new veteran’s park across from Huck Sansbury Park having been recently dedicated and looking so great, and as we have just celebrated Veteran’s Day in our country, let’s give thanks for all that our Veterans have done in the line of duty to allow us to have freedom. The Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC) is available for businesses that hire certain classes of individuals and provides numerous tax credits for hiring these individuals. While the website link for WOTC explains all the requirements for hiring eligible employees and the tax benefits for hiring target groups, in this post I will focus on small businesses hiring veterans to receive business tax credits through the WOTC.

Small business owners qualify for the WOTC by hiring a veteran that fits in one of these three categories:

  • Service-related disability
  • Unemployed for a specified period
  • Receiving SNAP (food stamp benefits)

Even if a veteran does not fall within the above three groups, he or she may still be a member of another targeted group. Click here to learn more about how your business can take advantage of this tax credit.  The maximum credit for a veteran working at least 400 hours is:

  • Service-related disability and unemployed for at least 6 months in the year ending in the hiring year= $9,600 ($24,000 in wages X 40%)
  • Service-related disability and hired within 1 year of discharge or release from active duty- $4,800 ($12,000 in wages X 40%)
  • Unemployed at least 6 months $5,600 ($14,000 in wages X 40%)
  • Unemployed at least 1 month $2,400 ($6,000 in wages X 40%)

For small businesses, these tax credits can really help you to grow your business, so please give veterans a chance. Remember, they have gone through a lot of training that highlights the importance of being a team member, and they would like to be your small business team member.
