Sustainability through Milk Jugs and Megasites - An Earth Day 2020 Reflection

April 21, 2020

Bales of milk jugs to be recycled into Polywood furniture

April 22nd is Earth Day 2020. What better time to reflect on sustainability efforts going on in Person County, North Carolina?

Polywood

One of the most amazing and impactful of those efforts is through Polywood, a maker of outdoor furniture from recycled plastics. In 2019, Polywood recycled the equivalent of 146,000,000 milk jugs and is committed to incorporating a million pounds of ocean-bound plastic into its outdoor furniture in the coming year.

Person County is proud to be Polywood’s east coast location and to support their efforts, in part, through a partnership with the Person County Recycling Center to raise awareness about recycling through the #MilkJugsMeanJobs campaign.

Broadband

High-speed internet is the new clean water. As much as all our lives have been impacted by COVID-19, imagine what these days would be like without the internet. Often in rural counties, many people don’t have to imagine.

Person County Government has spent the last year constructing 52 miles of fiber across the county and has partnered with RiverStreet Networks1 to continue to close the gaps in providing high-speed internet to our citizens.

Our present circumstance has demonstrated that one of the most environmentally beneficial things a company may be able to do is to allow employees to work remotely. In Person County, this is an ever-expanding possibility.

Site Preparation

Person County’s vision with fiber expansion intersects another stride that is in-step with an economy transitioning to cleaner, more sustainable energy – the development of the Person County Mega Park. With its abundant power, water, and fiber capacity, this site has been developed since its inception with this industry sector in mind. Advanced manufacturers - such as semiconductor fabs, electric vehicle and battery manufacturers and data centers - seeking to locate or expand in the Triangle will find robust infrastructure to do so here.
